Personal Histories was a socially engaged project supported by the Festival of Making.
From October 2020 – February 2021, I travelled across Lancashire, researching sculpture plinths in regional towns including Preston, Lancaster and Blackburn. I created replicas of these plinths from salt dough, using material to lower their status as objects of power.
In January 2021, I ran a series of public workshops for residents of Lancashire. Together, we created salt dough sculptures from objects which resonated with our everyday experiences. These sculptures were exhibited on top of the replica plinths.
This project explores different methods for promoting accessibility to sculpture making using democratic materials, and reclaims status for our own histories in public space.
The plinths and sculptures were exhibited together in Blackburn Bus Station in June 2021.
